Another free photo print at CVS

Go to CVS and you can get a free 5x7 or 8x10 print- good until 12/24. Use the code ENLARGE. Also if you sign up for a CVS photo account with your email you will get an email for 50 free 4x6 prints.

I just wanted to add- I just tried this deal- it said there was $1.49 surcharge on orders under $5. The 8x10's are $3.99 and the 5x7's are $1.49. I ordered one 5x7 and one 8x10 and entered the promo code ENLARGE. I was able to get BOTH prints for free- the subtotal was $5.38 so there was no surcharge.

Giant Eagle week 12/18-12/24

The deals are pretty blah at Giant Eagle considering it is the week before Christmas. There is one fairly good deal on cereal.

Jumbo size box of Honey Nut Cheerios or Lucky Charms 2/$10- what!? you say $5 for a box of cereal!? Yes but it is the super large 1-1/2 pound size box. But the deal is better- buy 2 boxes and you get $5 off instantly- so you pay 2/$5. But wait there's more. Go here to print a $0.55 cents off coupon for both the Honey Nut Cheerios and Lucky Charms. Giant Eagle will double the coupons to $1.10. So pay $1.40 per box for the extra large box.

Two days only at Office Max December 19 & 20, Friends & Family sale event. Print this flyer to get special sale prices. Includes color copies for $0.29.

Low Priced Food Options

Here are two low-priced food ministries. They are similar- but Angel Food has a lot more host locations. Basically for $30 you get about $60 to $80 of "Aldi" type food.

Angel Food Ministries Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78. There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions, or applications.

Great Food For All The "Basic Food Box" anchors the program and is loaded with enough food to assist feeding a family of four for about a week, or a single person for almost a month! This food box, with a retail value of between $60 - $80 is provided for only $30. The menu changes each month in order to provide a variety of food. NO membership fees, NO paperwork, NO hassles, NO purchase limits, NO end to savings, just a Great Deal and ... GREAT FOOD FOR ALL!

I have done Angel Food but not Great Food For All. The basic $30 box of food (bring your own box) is quite a lot- I can stretch it most of the month. Check the website for host locations. You have to place your order about a month ahead.

They have several items in the store right now on clearance for $1. I picked up and Evergreen room spray for $1 and got the small lotion free. Makes a great stocking stuffer or teacher gift.

A few more ways to raise some cash

Here's a few more ideas I had to raise a little cash for Christmas gift-giving.

Sell your used infant and children's clothes, gear, toys, and maternity clothes at a re-sale shop such as:
Once Upon a Child
Children's Orchard
The Growing Years
Plato's Closet

Bring your spare change to a Coinstar machine- no fee when you choose a gift card instead of cash.

Check out Caregivers Marketplace- a cash back program for anyone who gets, gives, or needs care. If you buy Huggies diapers or many other products- you can get a cash rebate back by mail.

Finally, consider donating your old clothes and household items to charity. Here are some guidelines from Goodwill for what you can claim on your taxes if you itemize.

How I organize my coupons

I have tried a few different methods, but here is how I currently organize my coupons. First of all, if I have several of the same inserts I usually only clip one. I use an empty baby wipes container to store my coupons. It's the perfect size to fit several letter size envelopes. I stapled an index card to each envelope and wrote the name of the coupon category on each card. Voila! An easy filing system that was practically free to make.

Ways to make a little extra money

I have been doing online surveys this year- you won't get rich, but it's a very easy way to make some spending money. The two I use are reputable:

Your2Cents- I have earned $60 dollars so far with no trouble. You need to answer short surveys they email to you. I suggest using a "junk" email account like yahoo or gmail. You can also sign up to do surveys by cell phone. They send you a check in the mail each time you reach $10 in rewards. You earn between $1 and $5 per survey.

The other is Pinecone Research- it's a little trickier to sign up for as you have to find a referral site. I have not made as much money off Pinecone- but they do offer PayPal as a way to receive your money from them. They sometimes also offer products for you to try at home.

One site I absolutely DO NOT recommend is Phonehog. I will not even post a link to them. They offer free long distance minutes for filling out email offers- but they send you a TON of unsolicitated emails. I don't like them at all.

One last idea is selling used books, video games, CD's, and DVD's on Half.com which is an Ebay company. It's very easy to do- all you need is the product ISBN or UPC number. I like it better than Ebay because your item stays listed like a store until it sells. You can also put your account on vacation if you are going to be away. We have made several hundred dollars over the years with Half.com.

Making purchases on "Layaway"?

I read a report in USA Today recently that "Layaway" purchases are on the increase. Layaway refers to a practice of putting an item- anything from clothing to appliances- on hold at a department store. You pay a small fee and put some money down (usually 10%) and pay for the items week by week until you pay for it- then you take it home all paid for. No credit card bill coming next month. When I was a kid this was the only way we made purchases. Usually at K-Mart or another discount store. Every fall- new school clothes were picked out on August an put on layaway for a few weeks. Every November same thing with toys for Christmas. I know I didn't have any credit cards until I graduated from college and I got a Macy's-type store card with a $250 limit- that was it! I'm not sure if I would use layaway today because I really wouldn't want to pay the fee- anywhere from $1 to $5. But it's a good alternative to buying things on credit or over-spending. Mostly these days I have to stop and think- do we really need this item? will it make my life better? is there something else I already have that I can use instead?

At the end of the article there is a really troubling statement about today's consumers:

Edgar Dworsky, editor of the Internet consumer resource guide Consumerworld.org, said layaway teaches good lessons about patience and caution to shoppers. But he doesn't expect it to gain much traction with today's consumer. "Layaway really was a great deal and kind of a way to force people to budget their money," he said. "People don't have the discipline to do that today."

Sleep Number Bed

My husband and I had the chance to stay overnight at a Radisson Hotel and they have the Select Comfort "Sleep Number" beds. I have to say I was less than impressed. First of all, the beds make a noise like a vacuum cleaner when you are inflating the bed to your preferred sleep number. And the bed is not that comfortable. I'm glad we got the chance to try one out. I mean it was OK- but even set at 40 I thought it was very hard- and I usually like a firm mattress. Let's just say at about $1500 for their "economy" line king-sized bed, you would expect a little more comfort. So if you are even considering one, check out a Radisson Hotel first. The noise it makes was the biggest draw back to me.

SAHM

The Working Mom has a confession to make- I am now a Stay At Home Mom. Not by choice but about 10 weeks ago I was laid off from my full-time job. I was given a severance package so I am still collecting a weekly paycheck. It's really strange to not go to work every day- but I am enjoying my time off with my daughter. She just started preschool this fall- so now I am looking for a new job. Being a SAHM sure does keep me busy though!

Giant Eagle Specials 5/29-6/4

Here are the weekly specials from Marcy at Stretching A Buck.

I was able to do the P&G deal again- this time I bought $10 of Dawn and Mr. Clean products and got another $5 catalina back. I spent my other $5 catalina this week. The only thing I found out is you can only "spend" one P&G catalina per transaction. Not a fantastic grocery trip this week but I spent $62- which is better than last week! One negative about saving money on groceries is less fuel perks to use though.

Unadvertised Giant Eagle Deal

I stumbled upon an unadvertised deal at Giant Eagle last week and now I have the details. Buy $10 worth of participating P&G items and get a $5 catalina back OYNO. The items are Swiffer, Mr. Clean, Cascade, Dawn and Febreze. There have been many coupons in the P&G insert for these items and also in the P&G Home Made Simple booklet. Also Swiffer products usually have a coupon inside the box.

I bought 1 Swiffer dry refill @$3.99, 1 Swiffer wet refill @$3.99 and 1 Swiffer duster @$3.99 and got $5 back. I had $1 off coupon for each. So I spent $9 OOP and got a $5 catalina back.

The deal runs through the end of June but is not in the GE ad.

Hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend. We just got back from a trip to the Zoo. I did a little grocery shopping on Friday night at Giant Eagle and some how managed to get two catalina's for $3 and $5 and I'm not sure how since I did not research the deals this week! I was out of town for two days and just didn't have time. I did not do any CVS shopping this weekend either as I did not see anything I needed in the ad. I made a visit to a Super Wal-Mart for the first time yesterday. I think I might give up my Sam's club membership after seeing the store. Some of the prices are very good without having to buy in bulk. Lastly, we made a trip to the Step 2 factory store in order to get my daughter a Step 2 "playhouse" actually it is a gazebo and it was marked $100 off this weekend. So that will be her birthday present from us.

P.S. I also hit my first garage sale of the season yesterday and scored a Step 2 toy box in great shape for $8.

Coke/Diet Coke at CVS

I just paid $1.65 plus tax per 12 pk of Coke/Diet Coke at CVS. (That's just about 14 cents a can!) Here's how I did it:

Coke/Diet Coke 12 pks on sale for 4/$11 plus get one free
That comes to 5 pks for $11
I had a voucher for a free 12 pk from mycokerewards

BTW- I am amazed at the number of people that have their kids out at the store at 9:30 at night. DD is in bed promptly at 8:00PM!

10 easy ways to save on summer energy costs

As energy prices sour, everyone is looking for ways to save money and be more frugal. Here are ten easy steps you can take to reduce your home energy costs during the warm summer months.

1.Turn your thermostat up. If you are gone or working during the day, raise the air conditioning setting by 5-10 degrees. Better yet, invest in a digital programmable thermostat.

2.Replace your furnace filter monthly. A dirty filter makes the furnace work that much harder. Schedule routine preventive maintenance and cleaning of your furnace and air conditioner by a professional at least once a year.

3.Run a dehumidifier during hot humid weather, especially if you have a basement.

4.If you have ceiling fans, adjust the fan blades to push air down in the summer. This helps re-circulate the warm air that rises near the ceiling.

5.If you have a two- story house, check that the cold air vents on the second floor are closed in the summer. This help keeps the upstairs cooler.

6.Close your blinds and curtains on warm sunny days. Plant shade trees on the south exposure of your property.

7.Hang clothes outside to dry on nice breezy days instead of using the clothes dryer.

8.On very hot humid days it is better to keep the house closed up than to open the windows. It will take more energy to cool the house back down.

9.If the weather is comfortable, open the windows and get some fresh air. You can also run the furnace on “fan” only without the air conditioning. The furnace fan will circulate the air through without using the A/C.

10.Check into a co-op at the start of the summer season. You may be able to buy electricity at a fixed (reduced) price. Go on an electric utility budget plan. The utility company will average your payments out over 12 months, so you won’t get stuck with such high summer bills.

Do you have any other tips to share? I have replaced 2 kitchen bulbs with compact fluourescent light bulbs. So far I am not that thrilled with them. When you turn on the switch it takes a few seconds for the bulb to completely warm up. Also I'm not sure how you are supposed to dispose of them since they contain mercury.

Menu Monday and more

Here's my attempt at getting better at organizing my week- a weekly menu! I usually have an idea in my head of what we're going to have for dinner- but I thought things would go better if I actually wrote it down. I tend to plan based on what I have on hand- I rarely go out and shop just for dinner. Also we tend to eat out or on-the-run on weekends.

Sun: order carry-out
Mon: crockpot beef roast with potatoes & veggies
Tue: Johnny Marzetti casserole (make ahead Monday night)
Wed: frozen Boston Market meals (got on sale)
Thu: beef vegetable soup (use leftover beef)
Fri: turkey hotdogs, buns, baked beans
Sat: leftover buffet

For carry-out meals I try to use the Entertainment Book.

Tonight I also cleaned out the laundry room/utility closet and wiped down the washer and dryer. That was quick!

Anti-Procrastination Week

Cyrstal over at biblicalwomanhoodonline has delcared this week "Anti-Procrastination Week". So get up and get something done you have been putting off. I like to use the ideas over at the Fly Lady. Sunday night I tackled that pile of papers that collects on my kitchen counter. I threw away lots of stuff and found some stuff I really needed. I should have taken a before and after picture.

Frugal Friday!

Tightwad, frugal, penny-pincher, cheap! Do you see these terms as positive or negative? At one time I probably thought someone who was frugal was like my grandmother always talking about the Depression. Oh brother, here we go again! But all my life, my mom or my grandma re-used things like paper bags, bread bags, plastic wrap, aluminum foil. I thought it was so dumb! But now I see why. Partly as en effort to be more responsible about what goes into the landfills and party to be frugal. I even learned that sometimes it is more cost-efficient to *gasp* buy the smaller container of something! Hope you have a great weekend! Here is a link to more Frugal Friday discussion.

Walgreens

I'm linking to this website because there is a $5 off Walgreens coupon good tomorrow only April 11. Happy shopping!

No, I did not take a food inventory yet. I need to get busy!

Freezer, frig and pantry inventory

I'm really feeling the need to take an inventory of the food in my freezer, refigerator and pantry. I think I should have plenty enough food to make meals for a week without grocery shopping. Unless I need milk or bread or orange juice. Speaking of OJ- it's so expensive (usually $3 for a 1/2 gallon) we usually just have one small 4 oz. glass for breakfast so we can make it last all week. I guess if I had more time I would squeeze it myself. I do water it down for the kiddo- she doesn't seem to notice yet.
