Keeping your sink clean

I'm pretty good about keeping my kitchen sink clean by wiping it down after I do the dishes. I also heard Bar Keeper's Friend is a great product for shining your sink. But does anyone have a suggestion for cleaning the rubber flaps on the garbage disposal? My disposal always looks gunky (the part you can see). How about cleaning inside the garbage disposal itself? I put some baking soda and ice cubes down it occasionally. Any other ideas?

p.s. Here's some tips from the Fly Lady- enjoy!

Citrus peels are great for throwing down the disposal. Cleans it up and smells great. I think some vinegar and baking soda on a scrub brush put to those flaps would be helpful...never done this, but difinitely should!

I second Monica's answer. When we lived in an apartment, we had a garbage disposal, and I often cleaned the sink with vinegar and baking soda. And orange peels worked great to give the disposal a nice clean scent. You may also want to try a little bleach.

It took a while, but I finally realized there is a top part on my flaps that I can pull out. I used a toothbrush and some hot soapy water on it, and then on the rest of the non-removable flaps. It helped a lot! Not sure if they all have that removable top part, though. I just grabbed and gave a gentle tug, and it popped back into place kind of like putting the plug in. Good luck!
